With just about a month into 2016, its a great time to check-in with your ‘New year, New me’ goals! Have you been getting to the gym 3 to 4 times a week like you planned? Have you been drinking that 2L of water on a consistent basis? Have you opened up your palate to a variety of delicious clean eats? If the answer is yes – kudos to you! That is FANTASTIC! What better way to reinforce those good and healthy behaviours than with a reward! No, I’m not talking about a Big Mac! <Insert my infamous side-eye here>! When it comes to reinforcing healthy behaviours, stick to rewards that won’t be counter-productive to your goals!
Toronto is a world-class city that has a ton to offer when it comes to fitness variety. Plan a date to reward yourself for all the great work that you’ve put in, or simply check out one of these spots to incorporate some fun fitness into your normal routine!
Trampoline Parks are becoming widely popular. Feel like a kid again as you bounce and flip around! Believe me – just 10 minutes of airborne fun will have you huffing and puffing to catch your breath! Go with a group and enjoy activities like trampoline dodgeball and trampoline basketball. There are a number of trampoline parks across the city like Skyzone and prices are typically under $20 for an hour of jumping around!
Dust off those old blades (don’t forget to sharpen them) and hop on the ice for a great leg workout! There are plenty of indoor and outdoor skating rinks available across the city, but DJ Skate Nights at Harbourfront Center have to be my favourite! First, its outdoor, so you get that true ‘bundle up ‘cuz it’s cold as heck!” Canadian experience; Second – hello – it’s skating with a DJ AND strobe lights!; Third – it’s FREE! DJ Skate Nights are offered every Saturday night between the end of December to the end of February.
- Circus Training
Yes – this is a thing! The Toronto School of Circus Arts offers classes in circus training! Learn aerial maneuvers using a hoop, silks or straps; Learn acrobatics on the trampoline or master the flying trapeze! All will have you breaking a sweat! Course packages are a bit pricey – but well worth it if it’s your dream to fly on a trapeze!
- Axe Throwing
Round up your friends for a good ol’ axe throwing party at BATL! Axes and a glass of wine – what could go wrong!? They have a few locations across the city as well. Typical sessions last 2-3 hours and are about $40 per person. You might not work up a sweat with this one, but you’ll definitely get a great back and shoulder workout!
- Obstacle Courses
Did somebody say obstacle course??! Enter Pursuit OCR – an adult obstacles course full of climbing and crawling. Located in downtown Toronto, the course offers a rope ladder climb, curved walls to run up, rings and yes – every kid at heart’s dream – a ball pit. A single day pass will cost you $20.
- Archery Tag
Archery tag is like the new paintballing – with a little less pain. There is lots of running around, lots of upper-body engagement, AND you get a cool mask to wear – what’s not to enjoy! There are also a bunch of spots across the city, like Archery District, so it’s pretty accessible. Archery tag is a great group activity as well. A typical session is about $25.
- Skiing & Snowboarding
Now anyone that knows me, knows that I am a child of the sun. I do, however, love to dabble in a few winter sports here and there. Skiing is one of them! When I do ski, I like to venture out of the city to Blue Mountain for a ski day. A day of skiing with rentals will set you back about $120 – but if it’s any consolation, the leg gains from skiing are the truth!
Now that you’re equipped with some fun, out-of-the-box workouts – go reward yourself for all your hard work!
